Progressing the ICJ Decision – Melanesian Perspectives

The panel discussion will convene a focused Melanesian dialogue on progressing the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on States’ climate obligations. It will translate the decision’s legal significance into practical pathways for climate diplomacy, national implementation, regional cooperation and community-led advocacy. The event will recognise Melanesia and wider Pacific leadership in advancing the advisory opinion, while examining what it means for Pacific small island developing States, Indigenous peoples, present and future generations, and communities confronting loss and damage, displacement, erosion of cultures and identities, food insecurity, ocean change and cultural impacts. The session will combine expert framing, Melanesian storytelling and participatory discussion. Speakers will outline key findings, including duties to protect the climate system, cooperate, regulate emissions, support adaptation and respond to harm experienced by vulnerable peoples.
